Objective: Students will give personal
data and learn how to record their
data as a dot plot and a box and whisker plot. They will also learn how to enter their
data into a calculator list, retrieve statistical
data from the calculator, and make a
box and whisker plot on the calculator. Students will also be able to compare and contrast the difference between the two plots.
Day One- Students will be the day before to take note of the number of minutes from the time that they wake up until they arrive at school.
- The teacher should record the data in the front of the room in an organized manner.
Dot Plot- Students may work in groups of 2; however, each student should produce their own graph.
- Students will start first with a dot plot. They must decide on an appropriate interval, and will make the plot with the teacher’s guidance.
- The students need to answer the following questions from the graph
- Circle the minimum value on your graph.
- Circle the maximum value on your graph.
- Find the range of the data.
- Count your data pieces on your graph and find the data piece that is in the middle and circle. This is the median.
- Are any of your columns taller than the rest?
- Draw a box around the tallest column or columns. This is your mode.
Box Plot- Use your dot plot to help you find the five number summary.
- Each student can make the box and whisker plot with the teacher’s guidance.
- The students need to answer the following questions from the graph.
- Is each piece of data pictured on this graph?
- Explain if you can easily find the range of the data on this graph.
- What percent of the data falls to the left of the median?
- What percent of the data falls to the right of the median?
- What percent of the data is in the entire box of the graph?
- What percent of the data falls between the minimum and quartile 1?
- What percent of the data falls between the minimum and quartile 3?
Day 2 - Entering the
data into a list, retrieving the five number summary from the calculator, and making a
box and whisker plot on the graphing calculator.
- Enter the data from the previous day into list one of your calculator. For assistance, you may want to reference our calculator lesson on Data Input.
- Get the statistic on one-variable statistics from your calculator. For assistance, you may want to reference our calculator lesson on Variable Statistics.
- Find the five number summary and compare to your work from yesterday.

- Have your calculator make a box and whisker plot. (calculator lesson on graphing and setting a window)
- Use the TRACE function on your calculator on your calculator and note the five number summary.
- Compare your hand drawn graph from yesterday with the calculator’s graph.
- Compare and contrast the dot plot and the box and whisker graph.
